TURNING THE DODGER 📚 🔐 Throwing checks sho

TURNING THE DODGER 📚 🔐

Throwing checks should not be the primary focus of a defender, but there is a time and place for them on the field. Here we look at how #16 on UVA utilizes a 2 handed wrap check or “deep wrap” to get his hips around and tie up the attackman.

In this series we see:
✅ Poke and Drop-Step
✅ Punch out hands to absorb contact
✅ Hips close towards sideline (right foot up)

Since the defender is not able to force the dodger wider or turn his hips towards the corner earlier, the deep wrap allows him to get around to the dodger’s strong hand and tie him up. This is a relatively low risk check in this scenario, particularly at this location when you play on a defense that backside doubles as well as UVA’s.
