First Class Lacrosse Notebook: NSHLS Fall 2022

First Class Lacrosse Notebook: NSHLS Fall 2022

The last weekend headed into Thanksgiving Break featured top talent and strong competition at the NHSLS Fall High School event. Winds held off, and the sun was out, making it a bit more bearable than a typical November weekend in Baltimore. Let's take a look at a few standouts from the Troy Park location.

NHSLS - Fall Session

Attack

Peter Moynihan, 2023, Yale Commit | Taft School | Highlight Link

Moynihan got cooking for 3 big goals against McDonogh. He facilitated the offense well for Taft and plays and competes hard. He is continuing to develop great feel for when to be physical and attack his matchup versus rifling skip passes or swinging it. Yale has the next Matt Brandau esque impact player in Peter.

Brendan Millon, 2025, Uncommitted | McDonogh | Highlight Link

Millon demonstrated high level stick work, IQ and off ball movement. Often finding himself open on the crease or anticipating the next play of the offense or defensive rotation. Had 2 tallies against Taft School off feeds from brother McCabe, including an insane BTB to the top corner from about 9-10 yards in the high crease.

Stu Gates, 2025, Uncommitted | St. Ignatius Prep (CA) | Highlight Link

Gates finished with a hat trick against St. Stephen's St. Agnes and showed a knack for finishing in a variety of ways. He plays around the crease well, catching, attacking with a COD and turning the corner. His next two came off a low angle high to high stick, and a pretty "one more" coming up the hash. Excited to see Stu at Best In Class next summer.

Owen Dixon, 2023, UNC Commit | Loyola Blakefield  | Highlight Link

Dixon did a lot of damage operating out of the box and the high wing. Consistently getting topside and drawing attention or getting underneath, Dixon plays with speed and can create his own shot.

Quinn Whipple, 2024, UPENN Commit | Taft School | Highlight Link

Whipple was playing at a high level off the dodge. Attacking from X and from wings/high wings, he displayed a great stick and control, often utilizing a variety of fakes. He scored a nice goal getting his stick back to the middle underneath from the high wing, and threaded the needle to a sneaking Moynihan. What stuck out most to me was his ready and willingness to attack righty and get shots off off the dodge. That's going to be a big boost to his ability as a creator.

Midfield

Jayden Hardnett, 2023, Christopher Newport Commit | Dematha Catholic | Highlight Link

Jayden stuck out to me quickly, scoring 2 second half goals in a chippy game vs Westtown. A lefty with nice size, Hardnett gets to the net well and has good hands and change of speed.

Ethan Rubenstein | Taft School | Highlight Link

Rubenstein had a breakout day with 3 second half goals vs. McDonogh in a 9-4 victory. Creating quality shot opportunities in both halves, his first came off a time and room off of great ball movement from the Taft offense. Goals 2 and 3 came off the dodge - a lefty down the alley, finishing to the net, and a rollback and redodge getting back up field for the right hand.

Giacomo Chapman | St. Ignatius Prep (CA)  | Highlight Link

Chapman, younger brother of 2023 teammate Bruno (Loyola Signee), is a "party starting" type of midfielder that really puts pressure on defenses underneath. He operates with a high IQ and plays with speed. One of my favorite plays on the day - he sweeps topside and swings it, gets it back on the give and go, smartly decides to not shoot, and tallies a hockey assist on a Tristan Ghosh step down.

Mason Hill, 2024, Uncommitted | Loyola Blakefield | Highlight Link

One of the stronger uncommitted 24's I saw on the day, Hill is a good athlete that a few coaches see in a possible 2 way role. He also got minutes at attack and has a lot of upside athletically.

Defense & LSM

Matt Surin, 2024, Johns Hopkins Commit | Taft School  | Highlight Link

Surin logged a strong performance against McDonogh School and top ranked recruit McCabe Millon. Surin displayed his size and range and moved well laterally. He contested everything off the dodge and navigated constant picks well, while his communication helped lead a formidable group.

Jack Schoenwetter, 2023, Marquette Signee | Loyola Blakefield  | Highlight Link

A high energy SSDM, Schoenwetter plays with great controlled aggression and is constantly nagging dodgers. He makes good contact and stays in the hip and does a nice job with slide decisions. He also is very poised with the ball in the middle of the field, something a coach can never undervalue from their rope unit. It doesn't take long to observe what Marquette Defensive coordinator and former Marquette/current Atlas SSDM Jake Richards sees in him.

Goalie

Jack Old, 2024, Uncommitted | Taft School  | Highlight Link

Old's standout performance of the day came against defending MIAA Champion McDonogh. Jack tallied at least 6-7 saves in the first half with just 3 goals against. He made an array of saves in tight and from distance, and read shooters well. He's athletic in the net and made a highlight worthy acrobatic save on a cross crease doorstep opportunity.

Wrapping Up

We hope you found this NHSLS Notebook helpful. We started First Class Lacrosse because we believe in the power of player development. We believe you can get exponentially better if you combine a great work ethic with the guidance of knowing what to work on and how to do it. Luckily, we experienced it firsthand as players and coaches. Our goal is to pass on what we have learned and experienced to future generations of lacrosse players, parents, and coaches ... or something similar.
